The game was part of the 2002–03 bowl season, which concluded the 2002 NCAA Division I-A football season. The LSU Tigers won the game with a score of 21-14. The MVP of the game was quarterback Matt Mauck from LSU who completed 13 of 16 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. This victory was significant for the LSU Tigers as they won their first major bowl game since winning the national championship in 1958 and it was their first Sugar Bowl win since 1968.
